Let's add the first set of blocks, which has 23 blocks, to the second set, which has 19 blocks.

🎙️

We start with the smallest place value, the ones. When we add them together, we have a group of 12 ones.

🎙️

Since there are more than 10 of them, we can create a long ten block, which leaves 2 ones.

🎙️

So 23 plus 19 give us a sum of 42
