Convert a mixed fraction to an improper fraction
This math skill teaches how to convert a mixed fraction into an improper fraction by multiplying the whole number by the denominator of the fraction part, adding the result to the numerator of the fraction part, and using the original denominator for the resulting improper fraction.

Let's convert the mixed fraction 2 and 4 sixths into an improper fraction

First we can look at our wholes. Each whole is 6 sixths. 6 parts are filled, and it takes 6 parts to make a whole.

Adding those together, the 2 wholes is the same as 12 sixths. 12 parts are filled and it take 6 parts to make each whole.

Now we can add in the 4 sixths that is our remaining fraction

12 plus 4 is 16, so we have 16 sixths. 16 parts are filled, and each whole is 6 parts.
