Let's use a fraction to describe how much of this circle is shaded

We can see that 1 part of the circle is shaded

And with parts of that size, it would take 3 of them to make a full circle

And that's all a fraction is. How many parts you have, compared to how many parts of that size you would need to make a whole.

So we have 1 out of 3 parts of a whole circle that is shaded. So, one third of the circle is shaded.
