Mixed fraction concept intro with pizzas
This skill introduces the concept of mixed fractions using pizzas as a model. It explains how to represent a total amount comprising whole units and a fractional part of another unit, where the fractional part is described in relation to the total required to make a whole.
🎙️
Pizzas are a great model for mixed fractions. Let's describe these pizzas as a fraction.
🎙️
First we can see that each pizza takes 7 slices to make a whole pizza.
🎙️
We have one whole pizza on top
🎙️
And the second partial pizza, on the bottom, has 3 slices. But we know that 7 slices would make a whole.
🎙️
So our fraction is 1 whole, and 3 out of 7, or 3 sevenths, of a pizza. This is called a mixed fraction.
