Mixed fraction subtraction with a changed denominator
This math skill teaches subtracting mixed fractions by first finding a common denominator, modifying the fractions accordingly, and then handling borrowing within the fractions to complete the subtraction.
🎙️
Let's subtract these mixed fractions
🎙️
First, like any time we add or subtract fractions, we need to have a common denominator. The lowest common multiple of 2 and 4 is 4
🎙️
One half is equivalent to 2 quarters if we multiply top and bottom by 2
🎙️
If we substitute that in, our denominators are the same, but now we can see that we have to borrow to handle our numerator
🎙️
However for a fraction, when we borrow, the whole becomes a fraction. 4 quarters is a whole, so when we borrow a whole, we add 4 quarters, so we have 6 quarters.
🎙️
Now, subtracting, we have one whole, and 6 minus 3, or 3, quarters.
