Let's understand how to think about decimals on the number line by reading a decimal value for this dot

We can see that the big lines, 0 and 1, are split into 10 sections, or tenths. So each small line is 1 tenth of a whole, or zero point one.

We can start from the whole number, 1, and begin counting small lines from there. So the first small line after the 1 is 1 point 1.

Our dot is 4 small lines after the 1, or a decimal value of 1 point 4.
