Subtracting in ten groups, including a borrow
This math skill teaches how to subtract using ten groups with borrowing (regrouping). It involves comparing two sets of objects, removing equal amounts from each until all pairs are matched, and determining the remaining objects in one set to find the difference.
🎙️
How many more red squares do we have in these ten groups than orange triangles?
🎙️
Let's start by looking at the red squares that are in the partly filled ten group. We have 6 of them, so if we remove them and we remove 6 orange triangles, we are a bit closer to seeing the difference.
🎙️
Now we have 2 more orange triangles. If we remove those two, and two matching red squares then we've removed one red square for every orange triangle. So the number of red squares remaining is how many more we started with.
🎙️
There are 8 red squares remaining, so that is our difference.
