Patterning - Visual Patterns Practice

This math unit progresses from basic to complex skills in pattern recognition. Initially, students start with the recognition and completion of simple visual repeating patterns, first using 4-item sequences and then advancing to 2-item sequences. As they progress, they practice predicting which shape or term follows in a sequence, enhancing their ability to recognize logistical continuations and understand the structure of patterns. Further, learners identify shapes at specific positions within repeating patterns, working with both 2-item and 4-item patterns. This subset develops their proficiency in predicting and recognizing pattern continuity and specific term placement. Towards the later parts of the unit, the focus shifts to a more comprehensive introduction and application of repeating patterns using visual aids, translating sequence lists into pictures, and recognizing arithmetic and place value number patterns. This transforms foundational visual patterning skills into more abstract mathematical concepts like algebraic thinking, number sequence analysis, and an understanding of place values, crucial for higher mathematics.Skills you will learn include:

  • Visual patterns
  • Patterns of color and shape
  • Extending patterns
  • Finding missing value in pattern
  • Term value
more

Topics are small, focused areas which build towards the greater unit's goals.
